Sea salt contains 92 essential mineral elements and most all refined adulterated sea salts only contain 2 elements. Biologically, 24 of these elements in handharvested, sun dried sea salt have already been proven necessary and essential to maintain and recover health. QUALITY AND QUANTITY DETERMINE WHETHER SALT IS ONE OF THE MOST HEALING FOODS ON THE PLANET OR ONE OF THE MOST TOXIC.

It has been common knowledge now for many years that if one takes a dilution of sea water and it is the correct dilution and you spray it over your garden and vegetables including wheatgrass, you will produce some of the most healthy, nutritious and abundant vegetables you have grown in your life.  Our experienced wheatgrass grower at the Creative Health Institute did this very thing with OceanSolutions and produced mineral rich wheatgrass that was measurable and was measured regularly with a Brix meter to ensure that they kept the nutrient density high.

  

However, if you get the dilution wrong and put too much in, depending on the excess, you will gradually poison, and eventually kill off those very same plants.

  

Quantity and quality are everything.  Just because I am a firm believer that salt is an 'Essential Superfood', I am not advocating having lashings of it - quite the opposite.  Completely in moderation and we could even be talking adding just a couple of grains to a green smoothie to help break down the fibre and increase the nutritional density.

  

I watch salt debates swirling around raw food sites even as recently as this week and are still amazed at the  total lack of indepth understanding so many people, including nutritional 'experts' have, regarding salt.  Their arguments always tend to focus on the polarity of 'salt' or 'no salt'.

  

This is such a shortsighted and  limited stance to maintain for all those who follow their guidelines due to the fact that it completely overlooks the issues of quality and quantity.  I strongly feel that salt, used correctly, has the potential to make a substantially positive healing impact on someone's health.

  

Kevin Gianni did a wonderful job organising and running a debate between recognised health leaders all week long and at the end of it he summarised what he felt were the7 major guidelines that he had come toafter hearing the arguments for both sides.   One of the seven guidelines was regarding salt usage and here are some of Kevin's words that summarize up his advice on salt intake.

"Maybe the most practical advice about salt is to not use it at home.  When you’re around other people or at dinner with friends, you can relax your rules."

  

Please, if you have learnt anything from these two articles that I have written, do not do this.  Do not leave the selection of quality and quantity of one of the most important foods in your diet down to someone else.  I would go so far as to say, don't eat food that other people have salted unless you can guarantee that they have indeed used a health giving salt in moderate quantity.  Ask them what salt they have used and then decide if it is going to be a toxin or a healing food for you based on the criteria I give you below.  The same goes for using any salt based foods like aminos and soy sauces.  Can you guarantee that they used the best ever salt available -  you can't and so I would say that you are better to use a salt of your own choice than to choose to trust the choices of a commercially prepared product.

  

How important is it for your salt to be moist?

 The moisture present in natural sea salt is paramount to its healing, nutritive properties and assures us that it still contains the numerous elements that buffers the sodium chloride part of the salt.  The moisture part of salt makes up as much as 16% by weight of its valuable trace elements and macro-minerals.

  

Processing and Drying of Salt

When the moisture inherently present in sea salt is forcibly removed by boiling, kiln-drying or vacuum lash re-crystallization, the first essential elements to dissipate are magnesium salts.  All other vitally important trace elements that are naturally contained within the moisture content of true, natural sea salt will follow the leader and also leave.

  

In addition to this high temperature drying, to prevent any moisture from being reabsorbed, salt refiners now add alumino-silicate of sodium or yellow prussiate of soda as desiccants plus different bleaches to the final salt formula.

  

Table salt chemically treated in this way will no longer combine with human body fluids and can lead to severe problems of edema (water retention) and several other health disturbances.

"In refineries, salt is subjected to excessive heat, exhausting oxidation and one or more bleaching agents are also used.  Thus white refined salt is now bone-dry and sterile: it cannot maintain life.  Table salt is also treated with caustic soda or lime to remove all traces of magnesium salts as these vital minerals will keep the salt from flowing out of the dispenser spout and will also bring in more profits on the chemical market.

The salt maker' commercial advertisements state with pride that their product is 99.0% pure.  This whiteness, however, is far from being a sign of excellence, it benefits only the chemical industry that buys 93% of the refineries' output."   Sea Salt's Hidden Powers

  

Salt's Fragrance Reminiscent of Violets

Dr. Langre of Sea Salt's Hidden Powers writes that

"Rare gases are locked within real sea crystals and begin to release when in contact with additional moisture and are effective in maintaining and restoring human energy. Note that Celtic salt should not be ground until used because, as it's milled, the salt releases a subtle fragrance reminiscent of violets, another telltale sign that gas, floral-like vital essences are being released."

 

These elements are easily trapped and stored in a preparation called sesame salt (Gomasio), a recipe for which is found here.

  

Storage

True, natural sea salt should be stored in an airtight container and kept in a cool, dark place.

The moisture has a tendency to settle to the bottom of the salt and the salt should be mixed before removing.  'Moisture assists the transfer of the energy of the great oceans themselves: if the oceans are the lifeblood of our planet then natural sea salt creates the lifeblood of our organism '- Jacque de Langres Ph. Recommendations for Usage

Salt consumed in its undissolved form could cause thirst which is a sign that the body is trying to rid itself of it.

In order to prevent this, salt should be added only during the end part of the cooking process and stirred well to dissolve it or added to smoothies, salad dressings and raw gourmet dishes while they are being processed and blended up well - not sprinkled dry on the food at the table.

  

True, natural sea salt needs to penetrate foods, allowing the moisture of the fruits, vegetables, grains, etc., to liquefy the salt, which activates it. If dry salt is used, it enters the body in a non-ionized form and can create thirst (a sign of being poisoned), and attenuate its properties because it is not being assimilated and utilized properly.

Seawater loses its ability to destroy bacilli if stored in bottles and allowed to dry out.

When using a ground natural sea salt that is naturally damp and stored in an airtight container, remember to stir and mix the dried salt at the top of the container with the damp salt  in the lower regions , each time you use it, to regain the benefits of that moisture.

 

 

Using salt in fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi or cultured vegetables is an excellent way of ionising the salt and increasing its bioavailability to the body.  Remember that when foods like this (including fermented soy products) are commercially prepared, there is no guarantee as to the quality of the salt used.  So the only way you can guarantee the quality and  use of hand harvested, moist, life giving, true sea salt is to make these foods yourself.

 

What to look for when buying your salt.

A true, natural sea salt will be moist to touch and you will even notice the moisture and stickiness or clumping of the salt through the package when you purchase it.  The salt will retain its moisture even when it is kept in cool storage for long periods.  The benefit of buying the chunkier salt as in the Hawaiian, Portuguese and Celtic Salt options is that the moisture is also trapped within the large crystals.

 

Personal Requirements

Everyone's tolerance and need for salt varies according to climate, activity, age, sex and condition of health.  As I have said before, we may be talking as little as a couple of grains in a smoothie or green juice but those couple of grains have the potential to make a dramatic difference to someone who is lacking these nutrients in this whole food form.

 

Situations requiring more than the normal salt dosage

  • In the case of hemorrhage,
  • severe burns,
  • violent physical trauma,
  • acute infection,
  • shock from an illness,
  • surgical intervention
  • or if very deep emotional turmoil occurs.

 

In these cases there is an immediate requirement for extra potassium (available in hand harvested natural sea salts).  This is best met by a salt solution made directly from a natural light grey Celtic sea salt, (and also in Hawaiian Sea Salt or Portuguese Salt).  This restores the potassium in the inner cell through the process of transmutation from sodium.  Louis Kervran, Biological Transmutations

 

Proper balance in the body is achieved by maintaining  a relatively high potassium content inside the cell and a relatively high sodium concentration outside the cell.  When these elements are in excess, the re-establishment of balance can occur in many ways eg. through urine, sweat, tears, feces or even vomiting. What about the Red Sea Salts

Around the Pacific region are native cultures whose main diet is pork and other animal products.  Through an inborn intuition they sun-dry and harvest salt by hand from the sea and then mix a red ocher earth with the salt.   The earth veins are rich in iron and potassium nitrate and supply the missing elements that salt needs in order to balance their high fat and animal protein intake.

 

So for those of you that still have high fat animal products as a component of your diet it would be beneficial for you to look at also including these salts as opposed to the low mineral rock salts that were also suited to meat eaters (see info below) in times gone by.

 

Rock Salts

Biology research has proven that earth-bound salt lake and rock salts, even though they are unrefined and natural, are unbalanced in their trace elements.

More importantly, these ancient sea beds have been stripped of many of their macro-nutrients, radio-vitality, micro-algae, oxygen, carbon dioxide and other vital gases.  All these components are vital for the smooth functioning of our organism.  And although rock salt deposits are not as desirable as natural sea salt, meat-eating nomadic tribes were able to adapt to higher concentrations of calcium sulfate and potassium chloride present in that earth salt because of their high meat diet.  Vegetarians, however, do not fare as well on rock salt....  Jacque de Langre

In Summary - Analyzing the Mineral Content of Salt

Selinas Naturals, a company that specializes in hand harvested, sun dried salts was interested in including Himalayan Salt in their range but after extensive third party testing, the low mineral content of that salt indicated that it did not measure up to the other hand harvested sea salts that are available.
