1 test kit for Secretor Status Testing for use with the Blood Type Diet

Recommended Reading which includes diet and supplement recommendations for Secretor and Non Secretor Status "Live Right 4 Your Type" by Peter D'Adamo

PROCEDURE (Please see bottom of page for more detail on kit usage) Upon purchase of this product you will be sent your test kit to complete and send through to the Laboratory in the Courier Pack provided.  You will be notified of your test results within 14 - 21 days of the sample reaching the laboratory. This test determines whether you are a secretor or non-secretor only - it is not a blood type test.

Why do a Secretor Status Test? For many people, knowing their ABO blood type and following the basic ABO diets in Eat Right 4 Your Type works very well.

However, some individuals may not derive maximum benefit from the Blood Type Diet until they first determine their Secretor Status. Knowing this information then allows for the use of the more specific diet lists included in the book Live Right 4 Your Type. Potentially, this test can make a huge difference to your food choices and your health. Whereas before you might have felt that the Blood Type diet didn't quite fit, this test will help explain why and will take the guess work out of your food charts.  It is like supercharging your diet once you really understand your status and how it affects your ability to break down different foods.

What is secretor status? By now you are probably familiar with the concept that your ABO blood type is controlled by your genetics, just as are your hair or eye color. The gene coding for your blood type lies on chromosome 9q34. However, other separate genes on chromosome 11 and 19 actually interact with your blood type gene, determining your ability to secrete your ABO blood type antigens into your body fluids and secretions.

This is called the secretor gene, and by testing for this gene we can determine whether you are a secretor or non-secretor.

In the genetics of the secretor system two options exist. A person can be either a secretor (Se) or a non-secretor (se). This is completely independent of whether you are a blood type A, B, AB, or O. Thus a person could be an A secretor or an A non-secretor, a B secretor or a B non-secretor, etc.

Secretors: In a simplified sense, a secretor is defined as a person who secretes their blood type antigens into body fluids and secretions like the saliva in your mouth, the mucus in your digestive tract and respiratory cavities, etc.

Non-Secretors: A non-secretor on the other hand puts little to none of their blood type into these same fluids.

As a general rule, in the US about 15-20% of the population are non-secretors with the remaining 80-85% being secretors. Aside from the physical implications centering around whether you have blood type antigens in your body fluids or not, the secretor genetics have additional significance through the effects of gene linkage: In other words, the outcome of your secretor genetics links to other seemingly unrelated genes and influences their function.

Your secretor status drastically alters the carbohydrates present in your body fluids and secretions in addition to several important aspects of your metabolism and resistance. These factors include the activity of an enzyme called intestinal alkaline phosphatase, the overall composition of bacteria in your intestinal ecosystem, your propensities toward blood clotting, your level of carbohydrate tolerance, and your resistance to certain parasites and yeast. In addition to allowing important diet refinements, knowing your secretor status can help you use nutritional supplements more effectively and intelligently and add to your awareness of illness and metabolic dysfunction you may be prone to because of your secretor genetics.

IMPORTANCE OF SECRETOR STATUS TESTING FOR SERIOUS HEALTH CHALLENGES Due to secretor status variability it is highly recommend that patients with serious or who have complex conditions are screened for their secretor status. This enables the clinician gain a deeper understanding of their condition and their predispositions. Further modifications can then be made to the blood type diet and their treatment.

Non Secretors Variation and its implications

  • Have lower level of intestinal phosphatase for protein digestion
  • Like blood type A and AB to have higher levels of Factor and Factor VIII
  • Non secretors develop Cardiovascular Disease from metabolic syndrome insulin resistance and type ii diabetes.
  • Non Secretors have higher levels of CRP (inflammatory markers) than secretors.
  • Foreign bacteria invade the system more readily
  • Have a higher risk of cancer than secretors
  • Are more susceptible to Candida
  • Immune system is geared differently due to the presence of ABO antigens inside the cell
  • Are susceptible to dental caries
  • Are sensitivity to bacteria which cause ulcers
  • Have a relatively high risk for the development of inflammatory bowel problems
  • Are at a higher risk of alcohol related disorders.
  • Have different dietary requirements and supplemental regime

Secretor status and Candida albicans

ABH non-secretors are much more likely to be carriers of Candida species and to have problems with persistent Candida infections. Blood group O non-secretors are the most affected of the non-secretor blood types. One of the innate defenses against superficial infections by Candida species appears to be the ability of an individual to secrete the water-soluble form of his ABO blood group antigens into body fluids. Although non-secretors make up only about 26% of the population, they are significantly over represented among individuals with either oral or vaginal Candida infections, making up almost 50% of affected individuals. The inability to secrete blood group antigens in saliva also appears to be a risk factor in the development or persistence of chronic hyperplastic candidosis. In one study, the proportion of non-secretors of blood group antigens among patients with chronic hyperplastic candidosis was 68%. (6) Women with recurrent idiopathic vulvovaginal candidosis are much more likely to be ABH non-secretors.
