Vitamin Code® RAW Zinc™ FAQs

What is Zinc and why is it important?

A: Zinc is an essential mineral that is naturally present in foods. The human body has approximately 2-3 grams of zinc which is found throughout the body but notably in the prostate, liver, eyes, bones and hair. It is an essential part of more than 200 enzymes involved in digestion, metabolism, reproduction (sperm formation), and wound healing. The body also needs zinc to make proteins and DNA, the genetic material in all cells. During pregnancy, infancy, and childhood, the body needs zinc to grow and develop properly. Zinc plays an important role in immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and cell division. Zinc also supports normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence and is required for proper sense of taste and smell. A daily intake of zinc is required to maintain a steady state because the body has no specialized zinc storage system.Zinc is also found in many cold lozenges and some over-the-counter products sold as cold remedies.

2. Who may benefit from Zinc supplementation?

A: Although uncommon, zinc deficiencies have been linked to loss of appetite, poor growth, acne and unhealthy skin, mental lethargy, delayed wound healing, recurrent infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, macular degeneration and reproductive challenges. Certain groups of people are more likely than others to have trouble getting enough zinc, such as vegans and vegetarians because they do not eat meat, which is a good source of zinc; they typically eat high amounts of legumes and whole grains, which contain phytates that bind zinc and inhibit its absorption. As a result they may need as much as 50% more zinc than the recommended amounts. Also, people on vegetarian or vegan diets are often the most afflicted with zinc/copper imbalance. Others that can benefit from zinc supplementation are those looking to support their immune system, healthy skin and eyes, prostate health and wound healing.

3. What are dietary sources of Zinc?

A: Zinc is found in many foods. Oysters are the richest source however they are not typically consumed on a regular basis. Good food sources include beans, nuts, whole grains and dairy products. Phytates present in whole grains, cereals, legumes bind zinc and inhibit its absorption. The bioavailability of zinc from grains and plant foods is lower than that of animal foods. Animal sources such as meat and poultry tend to be absorbed better than plant sources. To ensure a consistent supply of this important mineral a whole food supplement is recommended.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that assists the body in fighting against oxidative stress, and is vital for healthy skin, bones, teeth and gums, energy production and growth.

9. What does the RAW Veggie Mineral Blend include?

A: The RAW Veggie Mineral Blend includes 75 alkalizing trace minerals from peat, cracked- wall chlorella, spirulina and 17 organic veggie juices.

10. What is Ancient Peat and where does it come from?

A: Modern intensive farming practices have depleted the mineral content of the soil, so today we are left with a mere fraction of the levels of minerals and trace minerals found in the soil and hence the foods that we eat. To help solve this problem, Garden of Life has started to include a unique, low temperature water extraction of naturally occurring plant deposits buried deep within the strata of rich fertile soil. The pristine surface provides an ideal buffer from modern commercial chemicals, and the deep strata source has a natural protection from plant based mineral depletion. We call this unique mineral source “Ancient Peat”. We use a special cold water extraction method with our Ancient Peat. The resulting purified mineral powder contains a full spectrum of over 70 minerals and trace minerals that is RAW, natural and bioavailable.

11. What are Trace Minerals?

A: Most minerals are required by your body for normal and healthy functions in relatively large amounts ranging between 800 and 1200 milligrams daily. However, there is a group of minerals that your body also requires and benefits from, but in much smaller amounts. These are called “Trace Minerals” (alluding to the fractional amounts required to confer benefits to the body) and they include certain minerals for which a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) has been established. These include iron, zinc, manganese, molybdenum, copper, iodine, chromium and selenium. However, there are approximately 70 additional trace minerals for which no RDI exists but are commonly understood to confer benefits, including boron and silica.

12. Why do you include Trace Minerals from Ancient Peat in some of your new RAW formulas?

A: At Garden of Life we take great pride in offering our customers innovative products. Our RAW products are designed to capture the many benefits of natural healthy RAW foods. We take time to make sure our premium quality wholefood nutrients are delivered as food. Additionally we make sure that our formulas also contain the necessary nutritional cofactors and natural delivery systems for these nutrients. We included Ancient Peat in some of our new mineral formulas because it delivers some of the elements missing from a healthy diet and is rich in alkalizing trace minerals. These minerals play an important role in human health, and help to alkalize the body, assist with absorption and act as cofactors for enzymes for digestion and utilization of nutrients.

13. What is the RAW Probiotic and Enzyme Blend composed of?

A: The RAW Probiotic and Enzyme Blend includes the probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii and the enzymes protease, phytase, beta-glucanase, alpha-galactosidase and hemicellulase and cellulase; this blend provides probiotics and enzymes to aid digestion.
