2. What is iron and why is it important?
A: Iron is a necessary trace element used by almost all living organisms. Almost two- thirds of the body’s iron is found in hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells that nourishes every cell in the body with oxygen; without it, the body could not make ATP (the body's primary energy source) causing fatigue, the first symptom of iron deficiency. Iron is also a component of myoglobin, a protein that provides extra fuel to muscles during exertion. Additionally, it is involved in the production of carnitine, collagen, elastin and several brain neurotransmitters.
3. Who may benefit from iron supplementation?
A: According to the World Health Organization iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide. The most severe form of iron deficiency is iron- deficiencyanemia. Vegetarians and vegans are more likely to consume less absorbable iron and as a result have reduced iron stores; planning meals carefully can be of help and iron supplements could assist for optimal iron intake. Women of childbearing age require additional iron to compensate for menstrual blood loss and for tissue growth during pregnancy and blood loss at delivery and postpartum. Recently gastric bypass surgery has become more common as a weight reduction solution and these individuals are susceptible to iron deficiency. Blood donors are also at special risk of low iron levels and are often advised to supplement their iron intake. Many athletes who undergo strenuous exercise report incidences of "sports anemia." Some cases of low hemoglobin levels can be explained by temporary increases in plasma volume. However, others suffer from reduced iron status and true iron deficiency. Individuals with health conditions that cause blood loss or malabsorption may become iron deficient.
4. What foods are good sources of iron?
A: Good sources of dietary iron include red meat, fish, poultry, lentils, beans, leafy vegetables, chickpeas, black-eyed peas. Iron in meat is more easily absorbed than iron in vegetables, however the iron bioavailability can be enhanced by vitamin C.
5. What is the Recommended Daily Value for iron?
A: Iron recommended Daily Value for adults is 18mg per day.
6. How much iron does Vitamin Code® Healthy Blood™ provide?
A: Healthy Blood™ provides 28mg of RAW Food-Created iron, 156% of the recommended Daily Value.

8. How do vitamins B12, B6, and folate support Vitamin Code® Healthy Blood™?
A: Vitamin B12 works with B6 and folate in the production of red blood cells; they are included in this formula to complement iron’s function in the formation of hemoglobin, all of which support healthy blood and a healthy heart.†Additionally, vitamin B12 helps support your body’s own production of energy through its role in the metabolism of food; it helps build and maintain protective nerve sheaths needed for RNA and DNA synthesis.†Folate is very important for all women who may become pregnant. Adequate folate intake during the periconceptional period, the time just before and just after a woman becomes pregnant, helps protect against a number of congenital malformations including neural tube defects.
9. What are the benefits of vitamin C in the Vitamin Code® Healthy Blood™ formula?
A: Taking vitamin C along with iron enhances iron absorption. Vitamin C is integral to building and maintaining collagen, a protein that holds the body’s cells in place, including blood vessels, therefore supporting healthy blood and a healthy heart. Vitamin C is important for immune function in addition to being a powerful antioxidant that assists the body in fighting against oxidative stress. Vitamin C is also vital for healthy skin, bones, teeth and gums, wound healing, energy production and growth.

A: The RAW Veggie Mineral Blend includes 75 alkalizing trace minerals from peat, cracked- wall chlorella, spirulina and 17 organic veggie juices.
12. What is Ancient Peat and where does it come from?
A: Modern intensive farming practices have depleted the mineral content of the soil, so today we are left with a mere fraction of the levels of minerals and trace minerals found in the soil and hence the foods that we eat. To help solve this problem, Garden of Life has started to include a unique, low temperature water extraction of naturally occurring plant deposits buried deep within the strata of rich fertile soil. The pristine surface provides an ideal buffer from modern commercial chemicals, and the deep strata source has a natural protection from plant based mineral depletion. We call this unique mineral source “Ancient Peat”. We use a special cold water extraction method with our Ancient Peat. The resulting purified mineral powder contains a full spectrum of over 70 minerals and trace minerals that is RAW, natural and bioavailable.
13. What are Trace Minerals?
A: Most minerals are required by your body for normal and healthy functions in relatively large amounts ranging between 800 and 1200 milligrams daily. However, there is a group of minerals that your body also requires and benefits from, but in much smaller amounts. These are called “Trace Minerals” (alluding to the fractional amounts required to confer benefits to the body) and they include certain minerals for which a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) has been established. These include iron, zinc, manganese, molybdenum, copper, iodine, chromium and selenium. However, there are approximately 70 additional trace minerals for which no RDI exists but are commonly understood to confer benefits, including boron and silica.
14. Why do you include Trace Minerals from Ancient Peat in some of your new RAW formulas?
A: At Garden of Life we take great pride in offering our customers innovative products. Our RAW products are designed to capture the many benefits of natural healthy RAW foods. We take time to make sure our premium quality wholefood nutrients are delivered as food. Additionally we make sure that our formulas also contain the necessary nutritional cofactors and natural delivery systems for these nutrients. We included Ancient Peat in some of our new mineral formulas because it delivers some of the elements missing from a healthy diet and is rich in alkalizing trace minerals. These minerals play an important role in human health, and help to alkalize the body, assist with absorption and act as cofactors for enzymes for digestion and utilization of nutrients.

26. Why did Garden of Life formulate Vitamin Code® Healthy Blood™ and how is it different from Vitamin Code® RAW Iron™?
A: Garden of Life is always striving to offer our customers the best products possible. RAW Iron™ is a great formula however, based on consumer feedback we understand that some people are often in need of higher iron levels in their supplement so in response we decided to offer a new formula with higher iron content. We increased the iron content from 22mg in RAW Iron to 28mg in Healthy Blood; also, we added more vitamin C (from 25mg to 60mg) to insure the iron is absorbed. As we had the formula under review we decided it would be of benefit to include vitamin B6 as well. However, we did not want to sacrifice any of the other beneficial ingredients such as probiotics and enzymes. We only reduced the B12 which is still at a very good level of 45mcg (750% DV). We improved the overall base of the formula, which is free of binders and fillers, and added 75 alkalizing trace minerals with organic spirulina and cracked-wall chlorella. We simply could not fit all of these ingredients into one capsule, but there is the choice of opening the capsules. We are very pleased that we are able to offer a better formula at practically the same price! RAW Iron is still available for the many happy consumers who love it, a RAW, whole food source of iron that is gentle and non–binding. See below chart.
